Cool Calls & Tweets From Everest

Legendary British mountaineer Kenton Cool successfully summitted Mount Everest for the 9th time yesterday, Friday May 6, 2011.

Cool made the first 3G call from the Everest summit to his wife Jazz (see video above) followed by the one of the world’s first Tweets on Twitter from the summit.

Samsung provided Cool with their latest state-of-the-art handset, the Samsung Galaxy S II.

After Cool learned that a 3G base station had been placed close to Everest Base Camp by local telecoms provider Ncell, he wanted to prove a 3G signal could be received at the summit.

Prior to the expedition, 3G signals had reached heights of 5000m, but it wasn’t known if the 3G signal could reach all the way to the summit of Mount Everest.
