Discover Spanish Mountains

Want to trek the Pyrenees? Pyrenean Odysseys has launched two new traverses of the Pyrenees.

Spain is a mountainous country where some of the most famous and inspiring mountain ranges can be found, from the Balearic mountains to the Catalan range to the Toledo Hills.

It’s not just mainland Spain and the Balearics that are home to these mountains.

The Canary Islands are known for their mountains – the highest mountain in Spain is Teide in Tenerife (3,718 metres).

In fact, 19th century traveler Richard Ford once jokingly proclaimed that the country of Spain was just “one big mountain”, and just 12% of mainland Spain sits at a gradient of less than 5%.

Nothing will give you the real taste of the Spanish mountains except for a trip to them, trekking, hiking or climbing.

Probably the most famous of all the mountain ranges in Spain is the Pyrenees, the mountain range that lies between Spain and France forming a border between the two countries.

The Pyrenees extends from the Bay of Biscay to the Mediterranean Sea, making it 305 miles long.

The foothills of these mountains are home to a number of rock climbing areas, including areas for sports climbing and bouldering.

But the crags on the Pyrenees offer some of the most exciting climbing experiences, with the Terradets (up to 500 metres), Riglos (up to 300 metres) and Cavallers (up to 120 metres) and their challenging multi-pitch climbing for all climbers.

Rock climbing isn’t the only activity you can do on the Pyrenees, with ice climbing, glacier treks, paragliding and gentle treks all being very popular pastimes on this mountain range.

For beginners, gentle hikes are best because they don’t involve anything too complex or daring.

After all, plunging a newbie into something as complicated as free climbing or ice climbing is not only unfair, but potentially very, very dangerous.

So if you want to try climbing in one of the best places for it on the planet, then take it easy, go slow, don’t push yourself too hard and look into arranging a trek up the mountains on top of booking holidays to Spain.
